IN MEMORIAM
The Reverend Edward Davis Jones

1924-2005

Rev. Ed Jones

It is with profound sadness that we announce that Rev. Ed Jones made his transition from this earth plane on the evening of Tuesday, August 30th, 2005. He was a joy to all he touched and we will miss his physical presence deeply.

"A great tree has fallen and left
an empty space against the sky."

A service in celebration of the life and ministry of Rev. Ed was held on Saturday, September 10. Rev. Ed was survived by his wife Marcia.

Biography

Rev. Ed discovered Science of Mind in 1969 in Albuquerque, NM. In 1973 he became a licensed Science of Mind Practitioner and in that same year was elected to the (then) Board of Directors, United Church of Religious Science. The following year, he moved to Houston joining a NASA contractor, and started a study group which became a chartered church two years later. He then started a second study group in the Angleton/Brazosport area which also became a chartered church in 1983. During his day time work, after obtaining the contract for his company to operate and maintain the Ellington Field airport tower, he left the company, earned a real estate broker's license, operated a commercial real estate office and taught various real estate courses in an accredited school.

When he was called as the first minister of the Brazoria Church of Religious Science, he was told his only path to ordination was to graduate from the United Church of Religious Science ministerial school, so he resigned, enrolled in Ernest Holmes College, and graduated in 1986. During the several years in Los Angeles, he worked many hours in the World Ministry of Prayer. In 1989 he returned to the Houston area and helped reactivate the Bay Area Church of Religious Science, where he was the co-minister until he moved his membership back to First Church of Religious Science where he had become a member in 1974. He worked under a letter of call as staff minister at First Church until 1998 when he moved his membership to Creative Life Center, and achieved ordination.

As a boy living in rural Missouri during the Great Depression his next-door neighbors were President Truman's family. Ed joined the U.S. Navy during WWII and became a 19-year-old fighter pilot, eventually flying some 62 different aircraft from 26 different aircraft carriers, which, as far as he can determine is a record that still stands. After a 25-year career he retired from the Navy in 1967 at the rank of Commander. After retirement he flew for seven years as an airline captain for the Atomic Energy Commission.

Rev. Ed has also started, shared or has been in various small businesses such as a dude ranch, printing and mailing, air conditioner contractor, commercial real estate brokerage, residential elevators and dumbwaiters, and aircraft brokerage. During his Navy career he earned a Bachelor's degree in philosophy, and later completed course work for a Master's degree in Philosophy at the University of Missouri. He credits John G. Neihart, author of Black Elk Speaks, with whom he had the privilege of studying while earning his degree in philosophy, with being a major spiritual mentor. "I truly believe Dr. Neihart was a mystic and his writings well support it." It is he, Rev. Ed acknowledges, who is a major influence for setting him on the path that led to his decision to enter the ministry, a choice, he said, that continued to be the source of joy and fulfillment in his life.

A 49-year Mason, Ed was Past Master of Clear Lake Lodge #1417, A.F. & A.M., in El Lago, Texas; a Knight Commander of the Court of Honour of the Scottish Rite, Galveston, TX; and a member of the National Sojourners and Heroes of '76. These organizations join the Creative Life family in mourning his loss.
