YOUTH SERVICES & PROGRAMS
Children & Youth
The CLC Youth Services Department is devoted to celebrating the spiritual development of each child we teach. Our wonderful teachers and registration staff work hard to encourage individuality and creativity, based on age group, with a curriculum directly influenced by the teachings of the Science of Mind. Our children are involved in a variety of activities, workshops and projects that encourage them to pursue their creativity and develop their special talents that are unique to them. We strive to create an atmosphere of love and kindness in our words and actions toward each other and to recognize and honor the diversity of each and every person.
Our registration staff, Aleena~Joy Davis, RSc.P, Keri Ford, Mary Wilde (Practitioner in training), and Maria Aranda welcome you and your children each Sunday. All children must be registered, for safety purposes, before going into their classroom.
The toddlers, taught by Aleena~Joy Davis, RSc.P, Kelli and Ed Wu, Sarah Westbrook and Sean Hertzog, Stephanie Deatherage and Maria Aranda, experience their world as only a toddler can. They interact with each other, play games, and participate in other activities directly related to their age group. Our toddlers are made to feel safe and secure in their environment and they are a happy group of children!
The 3-6 age group, taught by Gayle Haulbrook, Sandra Check, RSc.P, Jennifer Janek, Ann Lux, and Lynn and Larry Dines (Practitioner in Training), begin learning the basics of treatment and the value of giving a smile and a kind word. This age group does special projects with teaching instruction which is age appropriate. Also, twice a month, we have volunteer storytellers who visit with the children and tell them a story, read them a book or perform a skit. Many times the storytellers are dressed in costume and the stories they tell, read or act out have a learning component which is directly related to Science of Mind teaching.
The 7-10 age group, taught by Jayne Leopold, RSc.P, Cindy Thornby and Yaso Nolan, continue to learn treament building on what they learned in the 3-6 classroom, but taught at a level more appropriate to their age group. This group participates in special projects, crafts and other teaching methods that encourage each child to be creative as they learn the basics of the Science of Mind teachings.
The "Tween" group (ages 11-13) is a new age group just added in 2010. This group is taught by Libby Beckhelm, RSc.P, Lisa Ryan and Debra Morwood, RSc.P. We continue to build on the learnings from the 7-10 class by continuing to practice treatment. We also provide age appropriate teachings related to Science of Mind. With this particular age group, we encourage sharing of any special issues they may face moving from elementary into middle school. The tweens continue to participate in activities with the Teen group, when appropriate, but the teaching they receive when in the classroom is mainly to honor their special needs.
The CLC Teen group (14 - 18), taught by Rene Wemple, Mary Wilde (Practitioner in training), and Keri Ford is a wonderful group of young people with a variety of talents. This group is engaged in special projects, guest speakers, workshops and volunteer activities around the campus of CLC. In working with the teens, we encourage their talents, keep them engaged in learning and we also throw in a little bit of fun along the way.
It is our pleasure to be of service to you and your child(ren). Your sense of comfort leaving your children in our care is important to us; more important still is their safety while entrusted to us. Between 11am and 12:15pm Sundays, your child must either be in the appropriate class, or seated in the Great Hall with you. These are the only options. Children are not permitted to roam the CLC campus unsupervised, nor to leave it without you, or with whomever you give us written permission to allow to take them. On Sundays, please bring your children who are going into class to the registration desk in the south lobby of the learning center for check-in, and fill out the necessary forms for children who are new with us. If you have any questions or want to talk with me for any reason, I am in my office located in the Learning Center from 10:15 until 11:00am on Sundays, by e-mail or by cell phone at (281) 787-2761. If you need more time or these times are inconvenient, please contact me and we can set an appointment.
Blessings, Debra Morwood, RSc.P.
What we teach our children
- We teach our children that God is Life - the Life within each of them and in all Creation; that all people are children of the One God, regardless of race, color or creed, and therefore, all are brothers and sisters.
- We teach that God is Good - all Good, and we are all created in the image of God - Good.
- We teach that God is Love, that we love God because God loves us; we obey God's laws through love, not fear.
- We teach that sin is a mistake and when we make mistakes, we are punished by them, not by God.
- We teach that God is Spirit and present everywhere, that this Spirit is within us and speaks to us through our minds when we are willing to listen.
- We teach that there are spiritual laws that must be obeyed just as we obey man-made laws.
- We teach that religion is something to be used every day, not just on Sundays.
- We teach that Religious Science is a religion that can be used at home, at school and at play; that since God is within us, heaven is also within us, that is we learn to live our lives in harmony with God's Law, we live in heaven now.
- We teach that God's love heals our sickness and hurt, if we believe.
- We teach that God is truth and beauty, peace and harmony; that as we grow to be more like God, our lives will be filled with health, happiness and success.
- We teach that nothing is too wonderful to happen, nothing is too good to be true: everything is possible to God through me and you!
